SUMMER!!!!!
We have been trying to find things for Zachary to do with his handicap. There isn't much to do but read, computer and movies. He has wanted to see "Mr. Popper's Penguins" for a long time. Since our "local" drive-in theatre was playing that AND "Cars 2," we decided that would be a fun evening. We decided to go on Tuesday night because the temperature would be cooler. Weather.com kept saying it was going to rain right when the movie would start. If that happened, we would all be crammed in the car to watch the movie - with the wipers going. Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
Guess what? The weather man was wrong. We had a few sprinkles on the way to the theatre, but nothing during the show.
We packed our dinner - picnic style (sandwiches, yogurt, fresh strawberries, Cheez-its, homemade cookies, iced tea and water). We drove the 30 minutes to the theatre and got there around 7:30. The movie didn't start until after 9:00. We ate our dinner and goofed around.
Inside the concession stand was this statue:
The kids sat on lawn chairs outside the car:
The other two participants (you can tell Dad doesn't like movies too much):
For those of you who are wondering, or thinking about seeing either of these two movies, don't. They aren't too good. If we hadn't paid to get in to see them, we might have left. I kept saying, "It gets better, right?" But, it never did. We had a good night in spite of a not so good set of movies. Still trying to think of things to do with a handicapped son, any ideas?

Bad movies, mosquitoes, and a 1:30 AM bed time...at least I shared the evening with good people.
Wow, it's like you tried to not show Z's left side.
Could you update on what the doctor said on Monday?
Doctor said to come back in four weeks (August 4). If he is healing correctly, he can do light things. He still can't do contact sports for eight weeks (September 1). Thankfully, basketball doesn't start until November. He should be completely healed by then. He says it doesn't hurt unless he moves. He doesn't move very often. Sleeping is the hard part. Still sleeping in a chaise lounge chair. Thanks for asking.
I like the pictures! Sorry the movies didn't pan out. If I think of any handicap-friendly activities, I'll let you know!
The shot of Z and E is really nice. They're two good-looking kids, for sure!
love,
Betsey
Your picnic sounds delicious! I miss drive-in movies, they are so much fun! Sorry the films that night weren't so great. I'm disappointed, since I was really looking forward to Cars 2. What did you dislike about it?
The movie was definitely a "little" kids movie. It was just boring to us "big" people. The kids liked "Mr. Popper" much better, but that was a little lame on the script side for us.
My eyes are also getting too old for the distance to the drive in screen. I might have enjoyed the movies more in a theater or at home.
Ah, I see. Sad. I might still like Cars, haven't grown up completely yet. :) Was it worse than Cars 1 in your opinion?
After looking at the last picture, man do I look like Dad!
Don't remember "Cars 1" at all. Like Dad said, it may be our eyes aren't up to seeing a movie so far away. I couldn't tell if it was blurry because of a film problem or if it was my eyes. You might like the movie.
That stinks that it hurts to move...that means no bike riding, swimming, etc? Learn to draw right-handed? Puzzles? Audiobooks? Learn a new language? Dictate a movie script to Elyse to write? Lego creations? Nerf office chair basketball?
Suggestions:
-see how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop
-learn to play jacks
-and marbles
-and any sort of board game
-everyone chooses a course to make, and have a homemade 4-course meal
