NOT TO BE BEAT BY ELYSE!!!!!

Zachary was doing math today and he needed to figure out the percent of decrease from 75 to 65. This is how ABeka says to do it:

This is how my "moron" son does it:

He didn't get the right answer, but it was close. The actual correct answer was 13.3. Not bad, huh?

BTW, he dictated the above sentences. I want it noted that I did NOT type him as a "moron."

I didn't completely understand either example, so I'm going to go ahead and classify myself as a moron as well. :)

Not bd, but I must correct the notation...

1. 65/75 = 13/15 TRUE
2. 13/15 * 20 = 260/300 FALSE rather,13/15 * 20/20 = 260/300
3. 260/300 / 3 = 86/100 TRUE or easier to read 260/300 *3/1 = 86/100
4. 86/100 = 14% FALSE rather 86/100-1 = -14%

However, notice that step 2. is just multiplying by 1. You could stop there and divide 13 by 15 then subtract 1 to get your 13.3% decrease. Z did it the way I'd do it, but he added some unnecessary steps.

Overall, good job Z! You are getting it! Don't let my pickiness discourage you! :)

Elyse agrees with Betsey: What the heck?

Have Z write it out. He'll get it. Typing it makes it hard to understand.

Zach gets it. He showed me how to do it correctly right after all the silliness (i.e 75-65 = 10; 10/75 = .133; .133x100= 13.3%). What I liked was that he just kept trying things that he knew he could do until he got an answer. Along the way he confused himself, though.

Now THAT's speaking my language. I'm tracking with that.
